The MonDak Heritage Center offers a variety of exhibits throughout the year, so one trip for residents is not enough.

Museum says residents, businesses should add to membership

MonDak Heritage Center officials are urging residents to give Christmas gifts to others that will help the entire community.

Giving a membership to the MonDak Heritage Center will help preserve the area’s history and cultural programs.

“It would be a great gift,” Sandy Turner, center coordinator, said. “It’s too beautiful of a facility not to be used. That’s why we’re trying to open it up to all kinds of venues.”

Membership levels are $15 for seniors, $25 for senior couples, $20 for individuals, $35 for families, $50-$100 for businesses, $100-$499 for sponsors, and $500 and up for patrons of the arts.

Turner explains memberships, donations and memorials account for 30 percent of the 16,000 square feet facility’s budget.

“It’s a vital part of the budget,” Turner said.

Currently, there are about 300 members. “It’s a little less than what it has been. We were up to 350, and our goal is 450 to 500,” Turner said. “We’re especially trying to get businesses to support us.”

Turner pointed to articles that stress how museums are part of economic development. “People want culture in their areas.”

She shares some reasons why museums matter: Stewards of a shared heritage that represents humankind’s greatest achievements and nature’s greatest treasures; catalysts of social change and partners in a knowledge economy; sources of civic pride and accomplishments; safe places to explore ideas and experiences; trusted sources of knowledge and inspiration; vital partners in our communities; and economic engines.

The MonDak Heritage Center cares for artifacts, features a history library and offers art collections.

“This is a lovely building. It requires having the entire community behind it,” Turner said. “Memberships also help fund many free events - such as Music at the MonDak.”
