Six Sidney wrestlers place at Eagle Invite Rules violations prevented numerous Sidney upper-class wrestlers from competing at the Eagle Invitational held at the Sidney High School Friday-Saturday. Needless to say, the Eagles were unable to place in the top three as a team. But, on a brighter note, freshman Brennan Gorder was the lone champion from the tournament. Gorder pinned Glendive's Jesse Griffith in 2:20 to win the 98-pound title. Five other Sidney wrestlers, however, also came away with placing finishes. Junior Levi Johnson was the only upperclassman to reach the championship match. Johnson placed second at 112 pounds by being defeated by Miles City's Kylan Zumpf, 9-1, in the championship match. Also wrestling at 112 was Scott Sturgis. Sturgis came away with a third-place finish with a pin over Glendive's Brett Stinnett in 2:15. Mac Collins, at 171 pounds, wrestled his way to a 14-0 decisive decision over Forsyth's Bryan Duncan to place third as well. At 160 pounds, Chad Dunn pinned Wolf Point's Dale Archdale in 1:25 to place fifth. Freshman Joey Escobedo was pinned by Glasgow's Kenny Bryan to place sixth. Sidney will be at full strength this upcoming weekend as the team duals with Dillon Thursday and then enters the Butte Duals Friday-Saturday. "The guys we had left on the varsity I was very pleased with. I thought they all wrestled great," Sidney Head Coach Guy Melby said. |
