Residents voice concerns over proposed location of new post office in Lambert

Published on Sunday, July 20, 2008 9:21 AM MDT

Roger Meyer, Lambert resident and businessman, requested a letter of support from the Richland County commissioners regarding the new location of the Lambert post office.

The U.S. Postal Service is presently talking about building the post office on Third Ave. N. and Second St. W. This location is in a residential area, across from the public school and on the north side; the roads are not paved.

Marcy Hamburg, county planner, already drafted a letter on behalf of the planning board. The letter mentioned how important residents feel the post office is to the viability and life of their community. Before Hamburg wrote the letter, the town got a petition of 100 signatures. The letter will be sent to Gary Mattox of the U.S. Postal Service who is in charge of this project.

The comment period will end on July 27, so all letters concerning the matter must be received by Mattox by that date.

“The residents are concerned about the location off Main Street,” Meyer said. “The town agrees that the best location is on Main Street.”

Some of the pros mentioned of locating the post office on Main Street were: central location, wide roads and sidewalks. Other oppositions to the presently chosen location included: the roads are too narrow, truck traffic by the school and the unpaved roads.

“We’re not asking that you decide one location over the other,” Meyer said. He emphasized the letter was only in support of the townspeople’s desire to keep the post office location on Main Street

County commissioners Mark Rehbein and Don Steppler, along with county Public Works director Russ Huotari, agreed to draft a letter backing the desires of the town and send it to Mattox.
