OLinda Lorenz Steinley was born on March 10, 1916, to Henry and Lousia (Leikam) Lorenz in Johnstown, Colo. OLinda was the second oldest of 11 children. At the age of 7, she moved with her family to Sidney where they lived on a farm two miles south of Sidney. They were beet farmers, so OLinda, along with some of her brothers and sisters, worked the beets by hand. OLinda was only able to attend school in Sidney through the eighth grade as she was needed to work at home. OLinda didn’t like working the beets any more than she liked washing diapers for all her young brothers and sisters. Many good meals were cooked by OLinda and her sisters during harvest for the threshing crews.

OLinda was united in marriage to William “Bill” Steinley on Jan. 13, 1935, in Sidney. It was 30 degrees below zero on that day. They had a wedding dance in a three bedroom house. After 11 years of marriage they were blessed with a son named, Garry. Bill and OLinda farmed several different farms in the Sidney and Fairview area. They retired to Sidney in 1975. Following Bill’s death on March 26, 1976, OLinda continued to live in her own home until moving to Crestwood Inn in 2001. After breaking her arm and hip, she moved into the Sidney Health Center Extended Care facility on Nov. 11, 2005.

OLinda was a member of the Ebenezer Congregational Church and the Ladies Fellowship. She always had a helping hand with dinners, funerals and shared many recipes. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose and she helped out there a lot. OLinda was a very good seamstress and did alterations for many people in the community. She loved to dance. She attended many weddings dances and social events. OLinda was always baking, and she could make all of the German dishes. She also made awesome fried chicken, because it was always crispy and crunchy. She loved to visit and share many stories and memories, if you had the time.

OLinda died on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care facility.

Surviving her are: her son, Garry (Jan) Steinley, Sidney; her granddaughter Tamara (Larry) Crowder and children Allie, Ella and Jacob; her grandsons Dean (Christie) and children Mattie and Bill; Todd (Jennifer) and children Kody and Danielle; her brothers, Harold (Audrey) Lorenz and Willmer “Sonny” (Darlene) Lorenz, all of Sidney; her sisters Elizabeth Buxbaum, Irene Knels, and Edna (Ike) Rambur, all of Sidney, and Bernice (Albert) Riedel, Fairview.

OLinda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; and brothers Reuben and Victor.
