Karen Marie Berryman
1954-2008

Published on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 4:38 PM MDT

Karen Marie Berryman lost her battle with ovarian cancer on Sept. 5, 2008.

Karen was born to Marvin and Harriet Thom on Nov. 3, 1954, in Bottineau, N.D. She was one of a set of triplets, a rarity at the time.

She attended school in Mohall, N.D., and received her degree in medical technology from North Dakota State University at Bottineau.

She took her first job in Sidney, where she met her husband, Bill, a physician in the local community. The couple moved to Watertown, S.D., and ultimately arrived in Grand Junction, Colo., in 1987.

Karen left the medical profession and began a career in business development helping various firms in Grand Junction. Her first love, however, was community service. She served on various boards including the Grand Junction Airport Authority, Mesa State Foundation, and most recently as chairman of the board of the Roice Hurst Humane Society, where many recognized her for her “Pet of the Week” spot on KKCO television. She also served as co-chair of the Mesa County United Way and is a Paul Harris Fellow in the Downtown Grand Junction Rotary Club.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Orpha and H.L. Wood, and Ruth and Martin Thom; her aunt Frances Stearns; and her nephew Kevin Thom.

Survivors include her husband, Bill; children, Eric, Nicole and Dan Berryman, and Janie Berry; her parents, Marvin and Harriet Thom; sister, Kathy Onstad; brothers, Bill, Kevin and Robert (Dobie) Thom; several nieces and nephews; and grandchildren, Hayden Berry and Quinten Berryman.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Joanne Virgilio who gave her hope and Dr. Charlie Roy and nurses Patty and Darlene from Hospice who gave her peace.

There was an open house on Sept. 9, 2008, at the home of Dr. Stephen and Georgia Meacham for friends and family to pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Roice Hurst Humane Society, an organization she worked so hard to make succeed.
