Show soldiers support by donating cell phones

A great way to show pride in our country is to cheer up our soldiers with donations of unused cell phones.

There are two sites to make donations in Sidney: IGA or the St. Matthew’s Catholic Church’s Parish Center. People may also contact Catholic Daughters regent Mary Thorsen, 488-1441.

Cell Phones for Soldiers, which is being promoted locally by Catholic Daughters Court Mother Cabrin #1766 and IGA, has been making a difference in soldiers’ lives thanks to the brainstorm by two teenagers. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to turn old cell phones into more than 12 million minutes of prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas in 2008. To do so, Cell Phones for Soldiers expects to collect 15,000 cell phones each month through a network of more than 3,000 collection sites across the country.

The goal of the Bergquist family, who started the program, is to raise enough money in the next five years to pay for such things as video phones and prepaid services.

It’s certainly a great cause to make our soldiers feel a little closer to home. Make sure you consider making a donation.
