Danny Strasheim knows Sidney basketball.

After being a standout high school player for the Eagles, the 1984 Sidney High School graduate has been a coach in the program for 23 years including 10 years as the varsity assistant.

Pending final approval by the school board trustees, Strasheim is the new head coach for the Eagles.

Strasheim replaces Rollie Sullivan, who resigned as the middle school principal and head basketball coach in July.

Strasheim doesn’t believe there will be a great adjustment for him moving from assistant to head coach.

“Actually being varsity assistant, Rollie gave me as much freedom as I wanted,” Strasheim said. “I had a lot of input. Rollie allowed me to do what I wanted.”

Strasheim’s coaching experience includes serving as head coach in 2007 when Sullivan missed 14 games due to health issues. Strasheim compiled a 9-5 record.

As Sullivan’s assistant, Strasheim was in control of the Eagles’ offense while Sullivan was in charge of the defense.

“Other assistants will need to step up to do other things,” Strasheim said. For example, if a maroon team and a white team are scrimmaging, he might be observing the maroon squad while an assistant looks at the white team.

Strasheim says the Eagles will continue to be up-tempo on offense and press on defense as much as they can. “That may change with your personnel. Sometimes it changes game to game depending on the team we’re playing.”

Under the guidance of Sullivan and Strasheim, a basketball program was created five years ago for students in grades 1-3. The result is much better numbers currently from seventh grade down for the program.

One change will be that in grades 4-6, students will play games against each other instead of working on only fundamentals.

With only one varsity player returning, Sidney won’t be near the top when pre-season polls are conducted.

“We’re going to be awfully young. We haven’t been this inexperienced for years,” Strasheim said. “But we will be competitive.”
