Richey won’t have boys basketball team By Bill Vander WeeleSidney Herald Richey High School will not field a boys basketball team this school year. The school’s athletic director Butch Zieske said that when he met with boys in grades 8-12, only two boys were interested in playing this year. “They had various reasons,” Zieske said. “There wasn’t a defining reason.” The school is looking at options for those two students to participate in basketball including playing with Lambert’s team. He added there are a couple seventh-grade boys that may wish to play next school year. For the past couple seasons, Richey’s boys varsity team has included eighth-grade students. Zieske, who is also Richey’s head girls basketball coach, said girls high school action will start at 6 p.m. this year. If the Royals have enough players for JV games, those contests will start at 6 p.m. If not, varsity games will begin at 6 p.m. He explained that a point will come when the girls program may also struggle with numbers. The volleyball squad consists of five seniors, a foreign exchange student who is a junior, five sophomores and two freshmen. “It will be a year to year thing there too,” Zieske said. |
