Richey won’t have boys basketball team

Richey High School will not field a boys basketball team this school year.

The school’s athletic director Butch Zieske said that when he met with boys in grades 8-12, only two boys were interested in playing this year.

“They had various reasons,” Zieske said. “There wasn’t a defining reason.”

The school is looking at options for those two students to participate in basketball including playing with Lambert’s team.

He added there are a couple seventh-grade boys that may wish to play next school year. For the past couple seasons, Richey’s boys varsity team has included eighth-grade students.

Zieske, who is also Richey’s head girls basketball coach, said girls high school action will start at 6 p.m. this year. If the Royals have enough players for JV games, those contests will start at 6 p.m. If not, varsity games will begin at 6 p.m.

He explained that a point will come when the girls program may also struggle with numbers. The volleyball squad consists of five seniors, a foreign exchange student who is a junior, five sophomores and two freshmen.

“It will be a year to year thing there too,” Zieske said.

" I hope that there will be increased participation by the Richey kids. I feel that sports provide a great opportunity to learn valuable skills for adulthood. I also hope that the rivalries between the Lambert and Richey communities do not sabotage the futures of the kids. Lambert and Richey are both communities fighting for their survival. If there is not some unity, both will cease to exist. I do not want to see either community go the way of Outlook, Flaxville, Antelope...... "
