Jerry Bergman, superintendent of the MSU Eastern Agriculture Research Center, told county commissioners Monday that he is working with local state legislators who will be submitting a bill to the Legislature.

The bill being drafted requires an estimate of the square footage needed for the Extension office and larger meeting room, which will be added as part of the new research center.

The total square footage will determine the final cost of the project, and the bill will wait to be approved by the state.

The bill will give spending authority to Montana State University to allow the Richland County MSU Extension office to be located at the facility.

Recently, the $420,000 fundraising goal needed for the Eastern Ag Research Center project was met.The 2006 Montana Legislature approved $1.6 million to fund the project.

Bergman says they’re looking for money from Busch Ag and the beet growers and says he believes they’ll be able to raise additional funds to add the Extension and a larger meeting room. There is also a possibility to request federal funds for future research/Extension programming.

The commissioners said they’d agree to help pay for the new office and meeting room as well as part of the parking lot.
