During tough economic times, some people fall into the trap of buying junk-food, processed food or boxed dinners because they are inexpensive. Even in a recession, with the proper motivation and diligent planning, parents can bring home meals that are healthy, affordable and even appreciated by the family. There are some great ideas for these nutritious and affordable foods for your household, all located conveniently at the Family Resource Center in the Sidney Public Library.
Some of these ideas include such options as remembering that the name brand foods you’re used to typically don’t have any better nutrition than generic or store-brand items. In fact, many canned foods all sit at the same factory awaiting the label of whatever brand calls and asks for a shipment – it’s the same food, from the same source, with a different label. The savings between generic and name brand canned or packaged food can be as high as 300 percent.
Also, remember that our bodies need fruits and vegetables even in tough times. Unfortunately, these are usually the first to be cut out of the family shopping list because of their expense. Fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive, but there are a couple ways to get these in your diet without breaking the bank. Canned fruits and vegetables are much cheaper and although their quality isn’t quite as high, are still far better than doing without.
