Family Resource Center at library can help with grocery decisions

During tough economic times, some people fall into the trap of buying junk-food, processed food or boxed dinners because they are inexpensive. Even in a recession, with the proper motivation and diligent planning, parents can bring home meals that are healthy, affordable and even appreciated by the family. There are some great ideas for these nutritious and affordable foods for your household, all located conveniently at the Family Resource Center in the Sidney Public Library.

Some of these ideas include such options as remembering that the name brand foods you’re used to typically don’t have any better nutrition than generic or store-brand items. In fact, many canned foods all sit at the same factory awaiting the label of whatever brand calls and asks for a shipment – it’s the same food, from the same source, with a different label. The savings between generic and name brand canned or packaged food can be as high as 300 percent.

Also, remember that our bodies need fruits and vegetables even in tough times. Unfortunately, these are usually the first to be cut out of the family shopping list because of their expense. Fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive, but there are a couple ways to get these in your diet without breaking the bank. Canned fruits and vegetables are much cheaper and although their quality isn’t quite as high, are still far better than doing without.

Finally, even in spite of recent food inflation, buying in bulk can easily overcome the money lost due to a rise in prices. Invest in food storage containers because you will most definitely get your money back. These can be used to store whatever is purchased in bulk for the next time it needs to be taken out and used for dinner.

The Family Resource Center contains all of this information in a recent addition to the library titled “Deceptively Delicious,” by Jessica Seinfeld. There are also other volumes available for your review that can help you serve nutritious, affordable meals. The Family Resource Center can be accessed from within the library and is a free service provided to you and funded graciously by the Montana Children’s Trust Fund.
