Every Wednesday at 1 p.m., a small gathering faithfully takes place in an activities room at Sidney Health Center Extended Care.

It’s at this time that the Extended Care stitchers group meets. They have been enjoying their time together for at least five years.

Lucy Rodgers, activities department at Extended Care, says former resident Diana Adams started the group and it has continued.

Anna Mathieu enjoys doing her embroidering work.

“Most of the time, we just have two or sometimes three ladies,” Rodgers said. “For awhile, we had at least four.”

Elaine Madison and Anna Mathieu are consistent participants.

Madison is currently working on a counted cross-stitch project that features a scene with a horse and a kitten.

“I’m making it for the birth of my great niece,” Madison said.

She can also crochet and knit, but the counted cross-stitch is her favorite. She’s been doing that for 25 years.

Mathieu, meanwhile, is busy embroidering dish towels.

“It’s just to do something,” Mathieu said.

Last year, she gave them out as Christmas presents.

“There’s seven in a set for the days of the week,” Mathieu said.

Mathieu can also crochet and knit. “That’s the extent of my handiwork.”

As well as making their new items, the hour also serves as a time to break up their day by socializing.

“It’s a get together and social time once a week instead of doing something just in their rooms,” Rodgers said. “If I can find something, I always bring them a snack.”
