Mass of the Christian Burial for Rachelle J. Sorensen, 64, Sidney, was at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2009, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Sidney with Father Greg Staudinger as presider.

Musical selections were provided by Robyn Heck. Wake services were at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel. Casketbearers were Steve Joslin, Dave Ruffie, Shawn Ruffie, Vic Gustafson, Nick Sorensen and Lance Sorensen. Honorary casketbearers were are all of Rachelle’s fellow retired teachers, friends and relatives. Ushers were Arnold Conradsen and Ed Eberling.

Interment took place in the Sidney Cemetery, Sidney, under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.fulkersons.com.

Rachelle was born on Sept. 17, 1944, in Bismarck, N.D., to parents, Jack and Frances “Fran” (Jacobs) Wilhelm. She grew up in Bismarck, N.D., and attended Cathedral Grade School and graduated from St. Mary’s High School of Bismarck in 1962.

Rachelle attended Presentation College of Aberdeen, S.D., for two years and then attended Valley City State Teachers College for two years. After graduating in 1966 with her degree in elementary education, her first teaching job was at Central Elementary School, Sidney, where Rachelle taught for 33 years, retiring in 1999.

Rachelle enjoyed her retirement. She treasured her time with family and friends in North Dakota and Montana. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church where she taught CCD. She enjoyed having coffee with fellow retired teachers at the Bean Bag every third Wednesday of the month. She also enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews – especially Hailey and Matthew.

Rachelle died on Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

She is survived by: her husband of 37 years, Gary Sorensen, Sidney; her mother, Fran Wilhelm, Bismarck; her brother, Mark (Terri) Wilhelm, Bismarck; her sister, Mary Sandbergen, Tampa, Fla.; several aunts and uncles; numerous nieces and nephews – including Hailey and Matthew.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Wilhelm.
