“When I was a young man in the 60s I lived in Wisconsin and traveled for a living. The Green Bay Packers dominated professional football.
“They had a blue chip player by the name of Paul Hornung better known as the ‘Golden Boy,’ ‘Mr Inside’ and ‘fastest runner 10-yards line to goal line.’ Many thought of him as the greatest and a super hero.

“He set me straight, ‘The Packers are the greatest and if we didn’t have a great coach in Lombardi and a great group of players, I would be a has been or a never was.’
“We got to talking and he said, ‘By the way Bob, how would you like to play a game of cribbage?’
“I was fairly good at the game because my family played it a lot, and I played it in the service.
“I thought to myself, ‘This is your Red Letter Day; you played Paul Hornung and you beat a Green Bay Packer.’
“I said sure and he asked about $5 a game and I said ‘You betcha’.
“When we finished I was at the starting gate and he crossed the finish line, that was something else he was fast at.
“ ‘$10 please, thank you for the game. Bob, nice meeting you sorry I have to run,’ Hornung said.
“Harry, I enjoyed your article about professional athletes. The games played now days feature the million dollar boys. What happened to my team is the greatest?
“Some professional athletes of the past were good at other games too, Paul sure was.
“I still remember my five minutes of glory getting trounced by the Golden Boy.”
Has been cribbage player,
Bob Lee
