Candidates file for elections

Published on Monday, July 6, 2009 11:49 AM MDT

Voters in Sidney will have a choice to make in two wards when city council elections are held in November.

In Ward I, two newcomers to the position have filed for the vacancy left by retiring councilman Paul Groshart. Melissa Boyer and Ken Koffler have each filed for the office.

In Ward III, former city councilman Bill Linder filed to challenge incumbent Janet Sergent.

Incumbent Deb Gilbert is running unopposed in Ward II.

Bret Smelser is running uncontested in Sidney’s mayoral race.

In Fairview, Mayor Bryan Cummings, Judge Ray Trumpower and treasurer Graycie Sharbono have filed for re-election and are all unopposed.

Councilmen Dan Cayko and Regan Taylor have filed for re-election for two of Fairview’s three open positions.

" You people think being on the City Council,School Board or any other elected position is fun for these people ? Look at all the stupid remarks being made here, no wonder no one wants to run for any public office. It would not matter who the person is someone of you intelligent people would still find something to B about. And it does not pay enough for these people to be bashed by someone that doesn't have a clue. Wise up and start thinking with a positive mind. "

" Someone has a comment about they represent the council at events, I rarely see any city council members at local events, the one I see the most is Janet. Granted I don't sit around and look for them and stay for a whole event from start to finish, but I still don't see them at a ton of events. I think it is time for some younger/fresher blood in the system.
I don't know who the answer is or how you get them in there, Josh King tried and was shot down.
I think young people need to be encouraged, there are a few of us out there that are interested in helping our community but are to afraid of what you people will do to us if we ran. You all seem to know everything about everyone and how wrong they would be for a position. A lot of you need to think about what you are writing and how you are saying it, you can't complain about something not happening if you won't be proactive and support new people coming in to change things.
Melissa Boyer is stepping out and running for City Council I suggest you all look at her and don't judge her as someone who is from of another town or someone who is "young" but look at what she can bring to the table...FRESH IDEAS!!!! "

" If you think that all the city council members do is go to the meeting, you are sadly mistaken (in most cases). They review materials and proposals, serve on sub-committees and attend community events representing the council. If you think they are paid too much, I suggest that you run. "

" About $85 for a meeting that lasts about a half hour is pretty good salary. Might even have been given a raise. Mayor's wage and health insurance is better than most cities and is extremely part time so Mel, you better check it out before talking about small wages for council and mayor. "

Jon wrote on Jul 7, 2009 9:24 PM:

" Gee I wonder why no one wants to be mayor - its such a highly supported position, pays well and no one would dare make unfounded accusations.

No matter what the position you get what you pay for - anyone who can afford to do it without the pay has far better things to do than be constantly berrated for doing what they think is best for their neiberhood, city, county, state what have you.

If its such an easy gig you could always run yourself. "

" You can be sure he benefits plenty as he sells merchandise the city needs. Wake up, council, and earn your pay! "

Doug wrote on Jul 7, 2009 8:25 AM:

" I agree wholeheartedly, we need someone to run for Mayor, I don't understand why this seat is almost always ran uncontested! I also wonder how there can not be a conflict of interest when Mayor owns businesses in other nearby cities and yet he is Mayor here? One wonders how much he is spending in these cities, that could be spent by a local mayor in our city. Just food for thought! "

sidney citizen wrote on Jul 6, 2009 10:04 PM:

" Sad to see that no one else but Smelser filed for Mayor which probably means that we will have 4 more years of the same. Happy to see some new people filed for a couple council seats tho. We definitely need to have a Mayor and council with some buzz in their butt to get this town to come alive with something besides casinos. It had more going for it 50 years ago than it does today. We are a dying town! "
