BOZEMAN – Two new publications, one to identify hawkweeds and one to produce barley, are available at no cost from Montana State University Extension.

The Hawkweed Identification Guide gives an introduction to hawkweeds and helps readers identify seven different species, including some that are classified as noxious weeds in Montana (orange hawkweed, meadow hawkweed and kingdevil).

Authors Peter Rice, research associate in the University of Montana Division of Biological Sciences, and John Halpop, Sanders County MSU Extension agent, included full-color photos in the 12-page hawkweed guide that shows full-grown plants, leaf, root and rosette characteristics to aid in identification. The publication was printed in part with funding from the Montana Noxious Weed Trust Fund.

The Montana Barley Production Guide is a 20-page, full-color publication designed to help producers make informed crop management decisions.

The guide was edited by Kent McVay, MSU assistant professor and Extension cropping systems specialist, with the help of MSU Extension specialists in plant pathology, soil fertility, entomology and cropland weeds.

The guide includes a history and description of barley, how to select variety, recommendations on tillage, planting dates and rates, weed management, cropping systems, irrigation management, managing plant disease, field diagnostics, and harvesting and handling grain.

Managing barley diseases is an extensive part of the book, with clear photography of bacterial, fungal, leaf and head diseases, as well as virus diseases. Insect pests and remedies are thoroughly described.

The Hawkweed Identification Guide and the Montana Barley Production Guide are free, and can be ordered from MSU Extension Publications at 406-994-3273 or at orderpubs@montana.edu.
