Whether it was mother nature or just luck, July Fourth was a success, officials say.
Though it was stormy before and after, Saturday was perfect for the nation’s Independence Day celebration. Starting with the Sidney Jaycees, who held a breakfast and later, their annual fireworks display, the holiday probably couldn’t have gone any better.
“It went really well,” president Jody Christensen said. “We had a great attendance from the community.” The organization served close to 400 people for breakfast, which was well over last year’s number. Then, during the evening, the fireworks display drew a considerable crowd that packed the parking lot of Millers’ Corner and the Sidney Country Club where it was held. Christensen said she’s heard “nothing but good comments.”

Meanwhile, on the safety side of the holiday, all was quiet, which really pleased Sidney Fire Chief Ken Volk. There weren’t any fire calls related to fireworks Saturday. “[The weather] just cooperated, and it probably was also because people took care of their stuff,” he said. Volk said he guesses about 25 of the department’s workers stayed home in case of possible emergencies.
The last few Fourth of July holidays have been busy due to hot, dry temperatures. Volk added he’d like to see more wet weather. “I hope it keeps raining every day for the next month.”
