The Richland County legion team put together a strong showing against perennial powerhouse Glendive Wednesday, but the Pats came up just short in both contests in a conference doubleheader.

The Blue Devils used a seven-run second inning in the first game to win 12-8, while pulling out a 9-6 win in the second game.

Glendive struck first in the as the Blue Devils scored one in the bottom of the first off of a pair of singles.

The Patriots answered back in the second with a run of their own. Cole Steinbeisser scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Chris Lee to tie the game up at one.

The Blue Devils blew the game wide open in the bottom of the inning. Glendive scored seven runs off of two hits, four errors and a pair of walks to take an 8-1 lead.

Once again, the Patriots responded with runs of their own. Tyler Schilling and Rick Haraldson got on after being hit by pitches. Both runners scored when Cole Steinbeisser blasted a homer to cut Glendive’s lead to four in the third.

The bats of Glendive stayed hot in the third. The Blue Devils scored two runs off a single, a walk and a run-scoring double off the bat of Sebastian Lamplier to make the score 10-4 in favor of Glendive.

Richland couldn’t get anything going in the fourth, fifth or sixth. The Blue Devils scored two runs in the fifth off of a walk, a hit batter and a Lamplier run-scoring single to make the score 12-4.

Down four in the seventh, the Pats tried to put together a late-inning rally. Lee led things off with a single. Brett Zadow, who kept the rally going with a walk, scored on a Rick Haraldson single.

John Brisben then added a run-scoring single to get Haraldson across the plate. Brisben scored when Mitch Kallevig ripped a single to cut the lead of Glendive to 12-8. Pake Hagen walked to keep the game alive, but the Pats were unable to score. Glendive earned the 12-8 victory.

Lee was tagged with the loss while reliever Jordan Nesper added six strikeouts in three innings. Kallevig led the Pats at the plate with two hits, a run scored and a RBI.

The Patriots jumped out to a lead early in the second game. Ethan Hoffman used good base running to score from first on a Chris Lee single. Lee later scored on a passed ball to help give Richland a 2-0 lead.

Glendive scored one in the first thanks to a lead-off triple and a sacrifice fly. Leading 2-1, Richland built on its lead in the second. Hagen walked and scored on when Kallevig reached on an error. A Nesper single scored Kallevig to give the Pats a 4-1 lead.

Patriot pitcher Steinbeisser held Glendive scoreless in the second to give Richland a chance to build its lead in the third.

The Pats did just that. Lee led off the inning with a double and scored on a Brisben ground-out to the shortstop to make the score 5-1 in favor of Richland.

The tide quickly changed as Glendive took control in the bottom of the third. The Blue Devils scored four in the third off two hits, an error, a walk and a hit batter.

Glendive scored a pair of runs in the fourth with two hits and three walks to take a 7-5 lead. Richland closed the gap in the fifth. Haraldson gave the Patriots a base runner after walking. A single off the bat of Steinbeisser scored Haraldson to get the Pats within one.

Leading 7-6, Glendive was able to get production at the plate in the fifth. A run-scoring single from Darien Samien helped the Blue Devils score two runs and take a 9-6 lead going into the sixth.

The Patriots were unable to get much going in the sixth or seventh innings. Hoffman added a single in the seventh, but Richland was unable to get any runners across home. Glendive earned the 9-6 victory.

Steinbeisser took the loss on the mound. Steinbeisser and reliever Nesper combined for seven strikeouts. Lee led the Pats at the plate with two hits, two runs and a RBI.

“There were some good things to take away. I thought we played some very good baseball in the second game, but we came up just short,” Patriot coach Jesse Nesper said.

The Pats host Glasgow today at 2 p.m. and will host Glendive and Plentywood in conference doubleheaders Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
