Last weekend, I had the chance to travel to eastern North Dakota and visit my family for a short getaway. I had a great time, but it was the trip there that reminded me why I am so thankful for what I have in my life.
Cruising along I-94, listening to some good jams on the radio, the fun quickly came to a halt near Medora, N.D., when an adult mule deer jaunted across the interstate and went head first into my 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix.
His horns shattered my driver’s side window and mirror while he managed to completely destroy my back door (my front right tire also blew), but besides a few scratches and a brief nap I was fine.

A group of hunters came by less than a minute to see what they could do help. I really appreciated their help, as I know they would have rather been finding a deer of their own than helping me on a Saturday morning.
They stayed with me until a member of the Billings County Sherrif’s Office arrived on the scene. I cannot thank the deputy sheriff enough for what he did that day. After going over the necessary routine, he offered to help me change my tire so I could still see my family.
After realizing my spare was light on air, the deputy drove 15 miles to the nearest town to get an air pump. His thoughtful actions allowed me the chance to get back on the road and see my family instead of spending a weekend in Dickinson, N.D.
I can’t thank these people enough for their kindness. These are the kind of people I am surrounded by on a daily basis and I am thankful for that. People who care more about those around them than themselves. This is now my second year in Richland County, and I have even more things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. More than anything, I am feel lucky to be where I am.
As you enjoy this Thanksgiving weekend, I recommend everyone check out the Junior Gold hockey tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Ranger Arena. Come by and help the Rangers kick off their seasons with a bang.
