County discusses rec coordinator position

Representatives of the county’s physical activity action group asked county commissioners to increase their commitment for a recreation coordinator position Monday.

Originally, the county committed $40,000 for a one-year position. The group is asking the county for another $31,000 to make the job offering for at least two years.

Another change is that Sidney Health Center HealthWorks will now share in the costs.

Scott Doty, HealthWorks director, explained that there’s a lot of overlapping between parks/recreation and fitness/exercise.

“It’s a good fit,” Doty said. “It’s all community recreation.”

The person would be a Sidney Health Center employee with benefits.

Blinda Larsen, spokesperson for the group, said more applications will probably be received if the position is for two years and full time rather than part time.

“We feel for this position to be given a true test, we need to go for the gusto,” Larsen said. “We really want to get qualified candidates to allow the program to be as successful as possible.”

Doty added, “It really would give this a chance to make things happen.”

Commissioners will consider the proposal.

“Let us discuss this a little bit and get back to you,” County Commissioner Mark Rehbein said.
