Sidney School Board trustees heard about the progress of the alternative education program during Monday’s monthly school board meeting.
The alternative education program offers a different setting for students who struggle in the traditional school format. Cori Crowe, instructor, says the program has worked with 22 students including 16 who were past drop-outs. Six of those students have graduated.
“They have a chance for a better future,” Crowe said.

Crowe said students benefit from positive peer pressure in the program. Students don’t allow others to drag them down.
Sidney High School Principal Dan Peters thanked former superintendent Doug Sullivan and current superintendent Daniel Farr for their efforts to get the program started last year.
“It’s been fun to watch these kids get their diplomas, four kids have just since I’ve been here,” Peters said.
In other business during Monday’s meeting:
• After reading legal advice, trustees agreed to an alternative project delivery contract process for the high school’s 300 wing/cafeteria/kitchen /commons building project.
Trustee Todd Hermanson stressed that he wanted the process to go as quickly as legally possible.
• ABC Concepts has donated $1,000 for the reader board to be located in front of Sidney Middle School. So far, $9,000 has been raised for the project.
• Trustees approved the purchase of a new activity bus projected to cost $403,000. The district designated its 2001 Bluebird bus as obsolete property and will attempt to sell that bus.
• A budget amendment proclamation for $900,000 in the elementary district and a budget amendment proclamation for $3 million for the high school district were read. The proclamations allow for oil and gas money to be utilized for building projects, heating systems and other areas.
• An interdistrict agreement hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 11.
