The Holiday Challenge between the Richland Ranger Junior Gold team and the Richland Alumni team will be held 7 p.m. at Ranger Arena Saturday.

The game, in its third year, has been good for the community Ranger alumni and game organizer Cole Fink said.

“It has been a success in the fact that we have been able to get old and new hockey families together during the holiday season for some good entertainment,” Fink said.

In the past, the game has served as a fundraiser for the hockey association to help with costs that come with maintaining a successful program. This year’s game will, instead, be a free-will donation with all proceeds going to Jay and Mary Pfau for ongoing medical costs.

“It is a great feeling to do something good for our community even though we may be miles away. A town like Sidney is as good as any for getting people together to support a good cause,” Fink said.

The match-up also gives the alumni a chance to again skate at Ranger Arena.

“A lot of us have moved away from Sidney and love the opportunity to get to play there again. We still remember when the hockey building went up, and some of us miss it like it was our home,” the game organizer said.

The alumni team will feature Chris Olson, Evan Krause, Kelly Berndt, Chantz Denowh, Marshall Donahue, Joe Kallevig, Kyle Cayko, Chris Lee, Travis Sergent, Tyler Thiel, Chris Nygaard, Levi Papka, John Bergin, Mike Kunda, John Kalberer, Jacob Kalberer, Keegan Witt, Rory Peck, Kraig Balcer, Andy Evenson, Joe Callen, JD Hardy, Chris Herman and Bryan McDowell.

“There is also the fact that we just want to prove that we can still keep up with those young guys,” Fink said.

The Alumni team will take on an experienced junior gold squad eager to pull out the victory. It should make for an entertaining match-up for the entire community.
