HELENA – The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) Program has saved businesses across Montana nearly $5 million since Jan. 1. WOTC is designed to assist individuals facing barriers move into gainful employment.

“As economic times change more and more employers are looking for ways to save money; by hiring individuals who face these barriers they can receive up to $9,000” says Labor Commissioner Keith Kelly.

As of December 2009, the Montana Department of Labor and Industry processed more than 2,545 requests from businesses resulting in tax credits of $4,692,000.  Employers see a $71 return for every dollar spent on the program.

The WOTC program encourages employers in the private sector to hire individuals who belong to the following groups: veterans, disabled veterans, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients, e-felons, supplemental security income assistance recipients, vocational rehabilitation clients and those receiving Transitional Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

Since 2006, the department has seen a 60 percent increase in the number of tax credit requests.
