Montana’s unemployment rate remains steady

Published on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 12:47 PM MST

Montana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained stable in November at 6.4 percent after dropping 0.3 percent in October. The national unemployment rate decreased from 10.2 percent to 10 percent.

“The unemployment rate has dropped from this fall’s highs. Montana also posted small gains in both employment and the labor force,” says Labor Commissioner Keith Kelly.

The total number of Montanans who are working, including agricultural, payroll, and self-employed workers, increased by 868 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The labor force, defined as those who are employed or looking for work, increased by 1,158. Seasonally adjusted, non-agricultural, payroll employment provided the only negative news, showing payroll job losses of 2,500 jobs, mostly in the Government and Accommodations and Food Service industries. The industries of Retail Trade, Construction, and Manufacturing, all harmed by the recent recession, showed small job gains over the month.

The seasonally adjusted consumer price index (CPI-U) rose 0.4 percent in November.
