As part of the third annual county-wide conference, residents discussed how to improve physical health resources.

Finding a recreation coordinator is still a need that most of the people feel must get accomplished. After finding that recruiting a person part-time for the position was a challenge, committee leaders were pleased that HealthWorks was willing to split the position’s full-time salary for two years. The plan is for the coordinator to mainly handle county responsibilities in the summer and assist HealthWorks in the winter.

Officials approached Richland County commissioners about the proposal and increased commitment, and the group’s leaders are waiting to hear the county’s final decision.

Residents attending the meeting voted the top three priorities should be: finding a county-wide recreation department/recreation coordinator; finding ways to utilize the opportunities for seasonal recreation; and identifying recreation needs and assess proposed or desired new facilities, long-term project use and intregrate into a capital improvement plan as needed.

Residents discussed applying for grants, utilizing the recreation director, thinking outside the box, using existing facilities and having more local hikes.

Top goals were identified as promoting healthier lifestyles, promoting walking activities, increasing adult activities, creating a recreation center, utilizing current buildings, and continuing the search for a recreation coordinator.

There was discussion about fundraising and research to expand walking paths in the county.
