Funeral services for Dick Johnson, 69, Fairview, were at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Fairview with Pastor Cal Oraw officiating.

Musical selections were provided by Pam Burman, AnnDee Taylor and Ellen Croy. Casketbearers were Jim Hunter, Bruce Watts, Mark Neu, Lyle Sponheim, Scott Buxbaum and Brian Cummins. Honorary casketbearers were Wayne Swenson, Tom Gable, Chuck Zackery, Lloyd Lester, Kevin Hurley, John Hutter Sr., August Lindecker and Dennis Dahl. Ushers were Duane Ullman, Brian Buxbaum and Wayne Swigart.

Interment took place in the Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, N.D., under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.fulkersons.com.

Dick was born on April 9, 1940, in Sidney, the son of Herman Walter and Evelyn Belle (Stubbs) Johnson. He grew up and attended school in Dore and graduated from the Fairview High School in 1958.While in school, Dick was a member of the 4-H and FFA. During school, Dick worked on the family farm and started to purchase his uncle’s farm.

After graduation he joined the Army National Guard in 1958 doing his basic training in Fort Ord, Calif., and finished training at Fort Knox, Ky. Following basic training, Dick returned to Dore were he finished purchasing the farm. Dick was honorably discharged from the National Guard in 1962.

He was married to Carol Madson in November of 1972, and they were later divorced. He continued farming in the Dore community. In 1986, Dick found the love of his life and his soulmate, Dee Cayko. They made their home on Dick’s farm where they have remained since.

Dick was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Fairview and the Fairview Cemetery Association. He was a past member of the Culbertson Threshing Association, Dakota Threshing Association and the Dickinson Car Club. He was the worry wart of the family. Dick cared and worried about all of his family members, friends, and of course the cows. He had his two favorite cats, Eeker and Bear. Eeker would ride in the feeder truck with Dick.

Dick’s motto was, “If you are going to do it, do it right the first time.”

He enjoyed restoring old tractors and collecting them, collecting old cars, toy collecting, all animals and visiting with everyone. Dick never met a stranger and was willing to help anyone out. He and his mother-in-law loved to joke and tease each other.

Dick died on Friday evening, Jan. 22, 2010, in the emergency room at Sidney Health Center.

Surviving him are: his wife, Dee Johnson, Fairview; stepson, Justin (Melissa) Cayko, Williston, N.D.; stepdaughter, Michelle (Perry) Jundt, Epping, N.D.; his sister, Joan (Paul) Eldridge, Fairview; his nephew, Walter (Erin) Eldridge, Williston, N.D.; his niece, Tammi (Coltson) Warren, Fairview; his aunt, Irene (Ed) Kuenstler, Olympia, Wash.; stepgrandchildren, Zachary and Laken, both of Fairview, and another stepgrandson on the way; and a great niece or nephew on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Lucie and Jack Stubbs, Herman Johnson Sr. and Ernestine Thompson, his two uncles, Clifford Stubbs and John Johnson.
