Fairview’s Colby McGinnis takes a jumper Friday in Savage.

Fairview’s boys basketball team clinched the regular-season title in District 2-C with a hard-fought 46-42 victory in Savage Friday.

Fairview trailed by a 33-28 margin in the jam-packed gym until a late surge in the third quarter. After two free throws by Josh Taylor, a steal by Brock Schriver resulted in a basket by Tim Hurley for a 33-32 game.

A basket off a rebound by Ty Hurley put Fairview ahead, 34-33, to end the quarter.

While Fairview’s aggressive man-to-man defense was shutting down Savage, Fairview stretched its lead to seven on two free throws by Tim Hurley, a steal and layup by Schriver and a hoop by Tim Hurley off a pass from Ty Hurley.

Savage, however, wasn’t done. A three-pointer by Shad Stanford closed the margin to 40-36 at the 3:51 mark. After a free throw by Ty Hurley, Savage struck for four straight on a steal and layup by Colin Basta and two free throws by Matt Trzinski to cut the gap to 41-40 with 1:29 left.

Fairview’s Ty Hurley scored off a pass by Schriver with 1:08 remaining. A free throw by Schriver put the margin at 44-40 with 48 seconds left. After Stanford kept the heat on with two free throws with 38 seconds left, Ty Hurley hit one for a 45-42 score.

After Savage missed from three-point range, Fairview’s Brandon Kittleson put the game away with a free throw for a 46-42 lead with only 10 seconds remaining.

Reaching double figures for Savage were Schriver with 12, Tim Hurley with 12 and Taylor with 11. Also scoring were Ty Hurley with eight, Colby McGinnis with two and Kittleson with one.

Braden Ler led Savage with 16 points. Rounding out the scoring were Trzinski with eight, Stanford with seven, Colin Basta with six and Chris Reynolds with five.

Fairview led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter and the game was deadlocked at 23-23 at the half.

The scoring of Stanford, Trzinski and Ler led Savage to a five-point lead in the third quarter.
