The Culbertson girls basketball team fought hard to hold off the strong, aggressive play by a solid R&L Fusion squad Friday. The Cowgirls put together a 12-0 run in the third to take the lead en route to a hard-fought 54-50 conference win on the road.

Leading 26-22 at the half, the Fusion looked to widen the gap even more early in the third quarter. Jennifer Trotter nailed a three while Laken Olson and Anna Prevost each added buckets in transition to give R&L a nine-point lead. After a Cowgirl turnover, junior forward Jamie Rosaaen hit a jumper to make the score 35-24 in favor of the Fusion.

The Cowgirls responded with a nice run of their own. A Morgan Martell three and lay-ins by Catlin Hofman and Bailey Nickoloff got Culbertson within four. A Maria Wind three after a Fusion turnover and free throws by Martell gave the Cowgirls a 37-35 advantage. Lexi Johnson added a bucket down low to help Fusion to tie the game up. A Reynen jumper and a lay-in by Nickoloff made the score 44-43 in favor of the Cowgirls going into the fourth.

A Hofman jumper gave the Cowgirls a lead of four. After a Olson lay-in got the Fusion within one, Hofman added a lay-in and a Reynen free throw made the score 50-45 in favor of Culbertson. Prevost added a steal and a bucket to get R&L back within three, but a Nickoloff lay-in gave the Cowgirls a 52-47 lead. The Fusion showed absolutely no quit.

A free throw by Trotter and a lay-in by Jamie Rosaaen got the Fusion within two with a minute and a half remaining. R&L, however, never scored again. A pair of free throws by Nickoloff with 10 seconds remaining helped the Cowgirls earn the 54-50 conference victory.

Trotter led all players with 19 points. Prevost finished with 13 points while Rosaaen had nine. Johnson added three and Olson finished with two points.

Nickoloff led the Cowgirls with 17 while Hofman added 11. Reynen had 10 and Martell finished with seven points. Wind added three while Chlebi Brugh, Shelby Weeks and Megan Gourneau rounded out the scoring with two points.

The first half was fast-paced and back-and-forth. The Cowgirls jumped out to a 7-3 lead behind lay-ins by Reynen and Nickoloff. Trotter, however, nailed a pair of jumpers to get the Fusion within three. Rosaaen added a lay-in to tie the game up, but a Nickoloff basket gave the Cowgirls a 17-15 lead going into the second quarter.

The Fusion controlled play in the second. A jumper and a three-point shot by Trotter gave R&L a lead of three. Johnson made a nice move down low to add a bucket and a Prevost lay-in made the score 26-22 in favor of the Fusion at the half.
