In what was a very close back-and-forth contest for the first quarter and a half, turned into a nice victory for the Culbertson boys basketball team Friday in Lambert.
The Cowboys used aggressive defense and a solid transition game to defeat a feisty R&L Fusion squad 61-37 for a conference victory.
With the game tied up at 15 midway through the second quarter, the Cowboys widened the gap in a hurry. A Wenden Martell steal and a bucket followed by a Fred Lewster lay-in after a Fusion turnover gave Culbertson momentum.

It didn’t take long for the Cowboys to get going. A Bolstad lay-in and a mid-range jumper by Alex Weeks gave Culbertson momentum. The Cowboys took a 38-22 advantage after a a pair of jumpers by Martell.
A three by Lester and a put-back by Darran Buxbaum gave Culbertson a 23-point advantage. The Fusion did its best to respond as Caleb Servais and Jeremy Evenson added lay-ins to make the score 45-26 in favor of Culbertson going into the fourth.
The Cowboys didn’t give the Fusion a chance to get back into the game in the fourth. Buckets by Oelkers, Weeks and Ben Bighorn gave Culbertson as big of a lead as 31 points. R&L, however, continued to fight back. A Johnson lay-in and a pair of free throws and a three by Charlie Switzer made the final score 61-37 in favor of Culbertson.
Evenson led the Fusion with 19 points. Johnson and Switzer had five while Servais added four points. Chris Gomke and Jack Switzer ahd two points.
Jackson Bolstad led the Cowboys with 13 points. Oelkers and Weeks had 11. Martell added eight while Lester had seven points. Buxbaum added six while Big Horn and Nygard had two points. Colton Bidegary added a point.
After the Cowboys took an early 7-2 lead, the Fusion tied it up at seven with a lay-in by Helmuth and a three by Evenson. Evenson, a junior guard, nailed two more threes to give the Fusion a 13-11 lead after the first.
A lay-in by Lester and a jumper by Martell gave the Cowboys a two-point lead, but a pair of Evenson free throws tied the game up at 15.
