Relay For Life celebrates birthdays

Published on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 3:16 PM MST

The MonDak Relay For Life will be “Celebrating More Birthdays” at the 2010 Relay For Life event July 23-24 at the Richland County Fairgrounds in Sidney.

The MonDak Relay will be joining with the American Cancer Society (ACS) in the fight against cancer, bringing hope that we will one day be a cancer free world, because a world with less cancer is a world with more birthdays.

By taking what ACS has learned through research and turning it into what they do, ACS has contributed to a 15 percent decrease in the overall cancer death rate between the early 1990s and 2005. That means that ACS helped avoid about 650,000 cancer deaths and created the potential for more birthday celebrations. Overall, 11 million cancer survivors in America will celebrate a birthday this year.

So how does the American Cancer Society celebrate more birthdays? They celebrate by promoting Stay Well, Get Well, Finding Cures and Fighting Back. Stay Well is the key to celebrating more birthdays.

Whether it’s helping you quit smoking, providing information on what cancer screening tests are right for you, or through simple tips to live a healthier lifestyle, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do about it.

In helping you Get Well, whether it’s the middle of the day or the middle of the night, ACS is your around the clock guide through every step of your cancer experience. The American Cancer Society saves lives by helping people get well by providing information to help make decisions, free services like transportation to and from cancer treatment or a free place to stay while receiving treatment far from home.

The American Cancer Society has a long history of saving lives by helping find cancer’s causes and cures. Whether it’s discovering medications that help people live longer and better than ever, or pioneering and promoting the most promising cancer prevention or screening tests, ACS has been involved in nearly every major cancer breakthrough in the last century. As the world’s largest private funder of cancer research, they support the best ideas of the brightest cancer researchers, who with each discovery are getting us closer to a world with more birthdays.

At its core, the American Cancer Society is a vigilant grassroots force of citizen-soldiers – passionate volunteers who tirelessly seek to save lives from cancer. ACS works with lawmakers everywhere to make this world a healthier place to live and rally communities around the globe to join the fight.

Whether it’s passing smoke-free laws, increasing funding for cancer research, improving access to quality health care, or inspiring communities to take up the fight, ACS fight on all fronts, because the lessons learned from one battlefield can mean victory on another. Through community events like Relay For Life® ACS mobilized the world’s largest movement to defeat cancer once and for all.

MonDak Relay For Life will be hosting a booth at the Community Health Fair and will have information about the event and how you can held celebrate more birthdays, because there is no such thing as too many candles.
