National Democrats, led by President Obama, should have an easy decision to make regarding whether they should push through health care reform legislation.
We’ve heard many times from Democrats that it’s urgent to pass meaningful health care reform now. We’ve heard with the struggling economy, health care for the poor is more important than ever.
If Democrats truly believe that’s the case, they shouldn’t delay or think twice about forcing a bill through regardless of what critics – even from their own party – or polls might say. Some Democrats should remember the words of President Kennedy: “If by a ‘liberal’ they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people – their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties – someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a ‘liberal,’ then I'm proud to say I’m a ‘liberal.’ ”

On the other side of the coin, if Democrats are right about the health care debate, the courage to carry the torch should serve them well for years to come. If the Republicans are wrong and the reform doesn’t lead to socialism, higher taxes and worse medical care, then they should pay the political price for slowing down the reform.
