When it comes to driving safely, alcohol isn’t the only factor that jeopardizes it. Cell phones, changing CDs, eating and applying makeup while driving can have serious effects on one’s driving abilities.

That’s why the Sidney Police Department and the Richland County Sheriff’s Office are partnering together during the health fair to inform residents of Richland County the serious consequences distractions can have while they drive.

“It is a safety issue. It is a health issue,” Sidney Assistant Police Chief Bob Burnison said. Under the D.A.R.E. banner, the two law enforcement agencies will have displays showcasing the various types of items or situations that can distract drivers.

Burnison said even though state law allows the usage of cell phones and eating, drivers still need to be careful when they’re behind the wheel. “We can’t have a law for everything but we can do things by saying, ‘People, when you’re driving, think about these things before something happens,’ ” Burnison said.

Patrons are encouraged to stop by the booth and ask any questions they may have.
