Officials fear missing girl fell into river

Published on Monday, March 15, 2010 3:05 PM MDT

According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday at approximately 4:50 p.m., the Richland County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a missing girl from a residence in northwest Richland County. The girl, Ivy Leinen, reportedly went for a walk and about 15 to 20 minutes later did not come back. She was with four of the family’s dogs, and when the dogs came back to the residence without her, the family started looking for her.

The residence is on the Missouri River, and after searching the area with tracking dogs into the night, the girl’s tracks were located and lead across to an island. After tracking the girl’s tracks on the island, they lead searchers to the main channel of the Missouri River. The tracks of the girl and the dogs were found on the ice-covered river near an open water area. The tracks of the girl lead to the edge of the open area of the river and none were found to return. The girl’s and the dog’s tracks are such that searchers believe the girl may have fallen into the open water.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Office along with the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office had personnel on scene as well as the Poplar Police Department, Fort Peck Tribal Police, Poplar Volunteer Fire Department, Sidney Volunteer Fire Department, and the U.S. Border Patrol. Those providing aerial support were Dallas O’Conner, Poplar, and Brian Ligon, Lambert.
