Jonathan Wenzel is congratulated by West Side Elementary principal Bill Nankivel.

Jonathan Wenzel, a student at West Side Elementary School in Sidney, has won first place in the fifth-grade division of the Pet Week Poster and Creative Writing Contest sponsored by the Montana Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary.

He is the son of Kim and James Wenzel. His poster was also selected to compete in the National Pet Week contest. He will receive a $100 savings bond.

The theme for this year’s contest was “Save a Life – Adopt a Pet.” The poster contest is open to grades K-8; the creative writing/poetry contest includes grades 3-5. Entries are judged by grade, at the winter meeting in Bozeman, based on originality, content, use of the theme for the year and love for an animal or pet.

Winners at the national level receive a $300 cash award. The winners of the national poster contest and essay contest will have their entries published in the Journal of Veterinary Medicine and the AVMA Auxiliary News. The winning poster will be the official Pet Week Poster of the Year and will be put on posters, bookmarks, T-shirts and stickers for distribution across the country.

Pet Week is an annual event that promotes responsible pet ownership, public awareness of veterinary medicine, and the celebration of the human-animal bond. This year Pet Week is May 2-8.
