Our hats off to girls basketball teams

Published on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 3:03 PM MDT

Between March Madness and NBA playoffs, those who want to will have the opportunity to watch more than anybody could possibly desire in the upcoming weeks.

But for us in Richland County, the highlight of the year for basketball occurred when a group of girls basketball players thrilled us during the post season.

The Sidney Eagles marched through the Eastern A divisional tournament and then made our community proud by traveling across Montana to Hamilton for the state tournament. The Eagles earned their first state title game appearance in school history and brought home the Class A second-place trophy to Sidney.

A week earlier, the Fairview Warriors excited us by winning the Eastern C title contest in overtime. In their first state appearance in more than 15 years, the Warriors knocked off Drummond and Winifred-Roy to gain a spot in the Class C state title contest. Think of all the 101 Class C teams in the state, Fairview was one of the final two remaining. What a great accomplishment.

The Warriors then dominated play in the state championship game and were able to bring the trophy to eastern Montana.

Yes, there is plenty of basketball but nothing is more exciting for us because these are our girls. We know the dedication they’ve made. We know the obstacles that have overcome. Because of those factors, they have a place in our hearts, and we care about their great success.

Plus nothing seems to unite a community more than the accomplishments of an athletic team. The efforts of these girls have certainly been the talk of our communities during these tournaments.

Congratulations to the girls for their success. It was an unforgettable great weekend for Richland County. Thanks to the girls for the thrills on the court, and you all should be extremely proud of how you represented our area.

" I would like to thank the Sidney Herald for the coverage of the Fairview Lady Warriors winning the state tourney. And the fact that they were undefeated all year. Unlike the Round-up, which did not even mention them at all this week. "
