On Monday morning, the crew of Inland Empire Shows started their task of transferring the grassy area of the Richland County Fairgrounds into a kid’s delight of rides, games and that lovable carnival music.

Robert Simard, general manager of Inland Empire, says this is his fourth time in Sidney during the last nine years. At previous fairs, he was a concessions operator.

“This is definitely one of the best fairs,” Simard said on Monday morning. “We look forward to it. It’s a great way to kick off the fair season.”

The crew’s first fair this week was last weekend in Lewistown. After Richland County, Inland Empire travels for fairs in Missoula and Kalispell for the next two weeks.

Last year, Royal West Amusements provided the carnival for the Richland County Fair. Inland Empire is Royal’s sister company. Residents can expect few changes from last year, but a few additions are noteworthy.

Simard announces this year’s carnival will feature the Zipper, Super Loop and a bigger carousal, 45 feet in diameter.

In all, Inland Empire will provide 14 rides, 20 games and four food wagons. The ice cream wagon features a 20-foot inflatable ice cream cone.

The carnival opens at 3 p.m. Wednesday (today). On Thursday and Friday, the carnival begins at 1 p.m. On Saturday, the carnival starts at noon.

The flag raising ceremony at the fair’s oval is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday (today).

" I also wonder why they can't get decent rides for the kids. I know we are lucky to have what we have, but when lines are backed up for at least a 1/2 hour wait doesn't that indicate that we need more rides? "
