It was a day of preparation.

On Wednesday, the 90-plus freshmen came to Sidney High School in order to familiarize themselves with the school prior to the first day of classes.

“Some of them haven’t seen anything of the school except for the gym and football field,” Sidney High School Principal Dan Peters said of the freshmen. “They really appreciate it because they didn’t know the building and where to go before.”

Peters said it’s also nice for the students to put a “face” to the name of their teachers. “It really helps.”

The day featured the freshmen going to each of their classes for a three-minute time span, the introduction of staff, a club fair, lunch in the courtyard, root beer floats from the Key Club, a fashion show to display what to wear at school/trips and a pep rally.

“You need to represent our school appropriately,” school athletic director Mike Gear said to athletes who are traveling to other schools.

Freshmen said the day made them feel more comfortable for the Sidney High School experience.

“I liked just going to all the classes,” Kennedi Sheehan said. “It’s nice that we can learn our way around.”

Toree Tofte agreed the orientation day was beneficial. “It’s just good to know where everything is so we don’t get as scared.”

Both of them took advantage of finding out more about clubs being offered at the school. They plan to join the Trading Cards Program.

Jared Troudt noted the day was a success because it lessens the possibility of getting lost at school. “But I’m still worried.”

John Elmore added, “It gives us an extra day to get used to the school.”

Ethan Chamberlain said the day is a good idea. “I’m a little nervous because it’s something new.”

" They also do this at the middle school. This has been a great thing the last couple of years. It took much stress off of our child last year and she also loved participating this year to help the new 6th graders.

Great thing to have continue! "
