The Sidney cross country team opened up its season Friday in Billings at the Billings Invitational. With five varsity runners, the Eagles took eighth out of the Class A teams in attendance.

“For the first meet, I was really pleased with the team’s effort,” first-year head coach Katie Haase said. “We ran against some really tough Class AA schools. There was some excellent competition.”

Leading the team was Alex Hammer taking 76th with a time of 22:49. Lizzy Gangstad placed 99th coming in at 24:38. Andi Brunsvold took 104th with a time of 27:29. Olivia Hintz and Molly Wilkinson took 105th and 106th with times of 35:06 and 37:22, respectively.

“I feel like all of our girls did really great,” Haase said. “I was happy with how well they competed.”

Nearly everyone reached their personal goals on the day.

“Before the day, they sat down with me and set goals. Four of our five runners reached the goals that they set for themselves. I was really proud of them.”

Sidney travels to Glendive Tuesday for a meet at 3:30 p.m.
