BOZEMAN – Montana State University is recruiting five Native American students into the College of Agriculture’s agricultural education division thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture/National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

“Our goal is to help increase the number of Native American students returning to their communities and working in agricultural education,” said Shannon Arnold, MSU ag ed assistant professor who wrote the grant with ag ed professor Martin Frick. “These students will help improve agriculture by working as secondary teachers, Extension agents or in ag industry positions.”

The $150,000 USDA/NIFA Multicultural Scholars Program Grant will be used to recruit students and fund their education for four years.

“Through May 2011, we will be recruiting students who have completed two years at a tribal college,” Arnold said. “They will spend the next four years (starting fall 2011) finishing their bachelor’s and completing a master’s degree in ag ed.”

The Division of Agricultural Education serves the needs of all students and agricultural professionals through a dynamic and comprehensive program of rural leadership, technological advancement, and proven scientific and educational practices. The program is grounded in basic and applied research aimed at improving professional and technical skills in the realm of Montana agriculture.
