Sidney Chamber of Commerce executive director J.T. Petrik resigned in January.

City officials struggled with a growing tax delinquency problem. Late taxpayer owed the city $484,000 in back taxes from the past three years.

A Williston, N.D., man withdrew his not guilty plea in Richland County District Court and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the shotgun robbery of a Fairview grocery store in July 1986.

The Valley Cash Grocery store in Fairview went out of business in February.

New owner Jim Neutgens, Wolf Point, reopened the Ben Franklin store in Sidney. Lori and Wallace Borah were hired to manage the store.

Tanya Holston, Fairview, played ice hockey for the Bantam team in Williston, N.D., because there was not enough interest to start a Bantam team in Richland County.

The highway department announced in March that the two-lane bridge located east of Fairview along Highway 200 on the Yellowstone River was to be widened and resurfaced in the summer of 1988.

The Legislature approved a funding package for the Gartside Recreation Area in April. The rehabilitation of the dam, empty since 1982, was scheduled for completion in 1988.

School elections brought a four-year term on the Sidney School Board to Sidney auto dealer Gary Schoepp and Police Captain Bob Burnison. They won the election over Kirby Dasinger, Gordon Rambur, Frances Sunwall, Rocky Norby and Janet Lorenz.

Phil Waber, Twin Bridges, was selected to replace Jack Adkins as the superintendent of Sidney Schools.

Fairview seventh-grader Fred McConnell became the state spelling champion.

In early May, the Sidney Chamber board selected Miles City native Fred Schinderle to fill the executive director position.

The Sidney School Board gave Drs. Virgil Hayden and Jimmie Ashcraft permission to lecture about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in local schools.

Three Buttes School closed at the end of the school year. The school, located east of Lambert, had only two students in its last year of operation. Only two rural schools remained operating in Richland County.

The finished Bourgeois House at the Fort Union Trading post in June sparked tourism growth.

Montana's first lottery opened June 24; eight stores in Richland County sold tickets for the first game. In July, Sandy Johnson, Sidney, was the city's first $10,000 winner; she bought the ticket at Farm and Home.

Decreased oil production led to a drop of 45 percent in the county's taxable valuation. The valuation fell from $102,199,380 to $60,708,895. To make ends meet, county commissioners asked for a 25 percent reduction in all budgets.

Gnats throughout the summer besieged Savage residents. The pesky insects were so bad residents of the town couldn't go outside.

Country singer Charlie Pride performed two shows in August during the Richland County Fair.

Rick Schneider of the Williston Herald took a promotion to become the Sidney Herald's new publisher in August.

Herald publisher Don Mrachek took over the duty at the Williston Herald.

Sidney Electric, located on East Main, celebrated its 50th anniversary in September. Louie and Dagne Lee moved from Crosby, N.D., in 1937 to start the store. Bob Lee was the manager of the store since 1971.

Five people from the nine-member Dahl family - Justin, Dana, Jenesy, Devin and their mother, Susan - delivered the Sidney Herald and Plains Reporter to the residents of Fairview. It was joked that the Dahls held a monopoly on the local news carrier business in Fairview. Dahls and other carriers were honored in October during National Newspaper Carrier Week.

Bainville farmer Kirk Panasuk won $10,000 in the weekly Big Spin state lottery game.

Western artist J.K. Ralston died in November. Local examples of Ralston's work are found on display in the Montana Bank (Wells Fargo) the old post office and the MonDak Heritage Center.

The 1987 Sidney football season ended with a state title. The Eagles came from behind in the second half to beat the Whitefish Bulldogs, 22-12, in a hard-fought contest at Swanson Field.

After several delays since April, the new Sidney Post Office finally opened in November. The Postal Service builds offices to accommodate a community for around 40 years.

A new newspaper in Fairview, supported by the Lions Club, began publishing in November. It was felt that nobody knows what's going on in town if you haven't got a paper.

Fairview Alliance Church celebrated its 10th anniversary in Fairview with the dedication of the new church building.

The Bainvillie Progressive stopped publishing in December due to lack of funds and burn out among the volunteer staff.
