Walking to Wellness half marathon starts Sept. 25 at local swimming pool location

Published on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 7:08 PM MDT

Join us for the third Walking to Wellness half marathon to be held Sept. 25 in Sidney. Walking to Wellness is a low key event designed to encourage the novice or casual athlete to train for a challenging but attainable fitness goal – walking or running a half marathon (13.1 miles) or an alternate shorter distance such as a 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles).

This event is not a race; although it will be timed for general information, no places or prizes will be awarded. A special thank you goes out to this year’s title sponsor, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A who will provide the marathon shirts and bib numbers.

“One of the most wonderful things about this event is that it allows multiple generations within our community to come together, participate and reach a common goal,” Staci Miller, executive director of the Foundation for Community Care, said.

To encourage multi-generational involvement, there will be a Wii console and Wii game awarded to the family having the most family members participate in Walking to Wellness. A free-will offering luncheon will be provided after the event at The Lodge.

Advance registration is appreciated, and forms can be picked up at the Foundation for Community Care, Patty Iversen’s office, Richland County Library or online at www.richland.org/activities. Participation is $15 – all proceeds benefit the Sidney Health Center Cancer Center.

Entrants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and parental consent is necessary for walkers under age 18. Final registration will be held at the Svaare Municipal Swimming Pool at 7:30 a.m. the morning of the event and completed forms may be returned to the Foundation for Community Care by Friday to guarantee a marathon T-shirt.

Whether you are participating in the Walking to Wellness to achieve a personal fitness goal or to support your friends and family who may have twisted your arm to give it a try, Sept. 25 is sure to be a day to look back on and smile inwardly when you remember the feeling of pride and success upon crossing the finish line.
