This weekend is the last chance to “e-rase your e-waste” in 2010, and this year you can do it for free at the Richland County Shop. The shop is located across from the fairgrounds at 2140 W. Holly in Sidney. Collection times are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Organizers of the event announced a new e-cycler this year, UNICOR, which is taking all accepted items for free. In the past there has been a charge for recycling obsolete electronic waste.
“We’re excited to be able to offer a free collection event this year for the community,” Butch Renders, a member of the local E-rase your E-waste committee, said. “The committee has been working toward this for a while, and we’re happy to see that people are responding. Already at our two half-day events, we’ve collected nearly as much e-waste as we did all of last year.”

“We want to thank the lab for all their help in the past and for their continued support of this event,” Renders said. “But the need for temporary storage and packaging space under the agreement with UNICOR meant we had to move the weekend collection this year.”
Renders added, “We’ve used the county shop for our August collections previously, so we know it can handle the job. In addition, it allows us to unload the e-waste inside in case of rainy weather, which our volunteers and participants really appreciate.”
Because lines may get long at the weekend event, Renders also offered some pointers to speed the process for those planning to participate.
In particular, he encouraged everyone to look over a handout posted at the USDA-ARS Northern Plains Agricultural Research Lab’s e-waste website (www.ars.usda.gov/npa/nparl/ewaste) listing approved items for recycling, since there are a few changes from previous years. Among the items NOT being accepted are consumer white goods (such as stoves and other kitchen appliances, including microwaves) mercury thermometers, CFLs or anything containing refrigerants, oils or acids.
