Looking for a perfect 2-0 start to the season, the Sidney football team is preparing to pick up its second straight non-confernece road win in Lewistown Friday at 7 p.m. The Eagles are coming off of a 21-20 comeback win over Williston, N.D.

“It’s another one of those games where there are no real surprises,” Sidney coach Mike Gear said. “We’re in a different conference, so we’ll both go our separate ways unless we meet up in the playoffs.”

The young Sidney team comes into the contest with some confidence after opening up the season with a victory.

“I think anytime you can pick up a win it’s a good thing, but it’s very important for such an inexperienced group to get off to a strong start,” he said. “Most of all, I was very pleased that we were able to handle all the emotional changes in the game.”

Another key to the Eagles’ win was the final drive as the team held onto the ball and ran out the clock with 5:17 left.

“After the game, we pointed out that the final drive was the best of the game,” Gear said. “There were other drives we scored on, but we were able to drive from our own two-yard line and hold onto the ball the entire time. I was proud of that.”

Sidney used a balanced offensive effort as the team finished with 182 rushing and 176 passing yards.

“As far as first games go, that’s probably the most balanced we’ve been offensively in some time,” he said.

While Sidney is coming into the game with momentum on its side, the Lewistown Golden Eagles are coming off a disappointing 35-0 loss at the hands of Laurel.

“They are very to similar to us as far as what they run offensively,” Gear said. “In the past, they have run out of the ‘I’ and also run some shotgun. So we’ll have to be ready for both looks.”

Gear looks to see a number of improvements from the Eagles in their second game.

“Coaches always say that the biggest change is from the first to second game,” he said. “I hope we see what we need to work on and are able to make changes necessary to be successful.”
