Fairview’s Brady Kortes dashes past teammates at practice.

The Fairview football team picked up its first win of the season Saturday with a 50-28 triumph over Hays-Lodgepole.

“I thought we came out a little sluggish, but really turned it on in the second half. It seemed like we were able to wear them down up front as the game went on, and we were able to break some big runs,” fifth-year head coach Kevin Clausen said. “It’s good to be 1-0 in the conference.”

After holding a 22-12 advantage at halftime, the Warriors scored 28 points in the second half to pull away from the T-Birds. Leading Fairview on the ground was Scott Andreasen with 153 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carriers.

Cody Vitt went 3-7 through the air for 88 yards including a touchdown pass. Vitt also had a big day rushing with 81 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Vitt’s top receiving target was Jonathan Shaide with 47 yards. Seth Flynn added a 38-yard touchdown catch.

The Warriors will now prepare to face Culbertson-Bainville in a traditionally competitive game Friday, 7 p.m., at home.

“Our game Friday is going to be a dogfight,” Clausen said. “It seems like every time we get together you can almost throw out the records and get ready for a smash-mouth game.”

The Cowboys, who sit at 0-1, are coming off of a 52-8 loss to perennial powerhouse Wibaux. Culbertson returns a number of position players including Nicholas Oelkers and Tanner Shanks.

“They have some excellent skill players and are big and physical up front,” he said. “We need to stay focused and make sure we are crisp in all facets of the game.”

Clausen is expecting Culbertson to be a tough match-up.

“I’m looking forward to a great atmosphere and a well-played, hard-fought game,” he said.
