Support group could lead you to better life

Published on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 7:06 PM MST

Many of us struggle with problems that negatively influence our lives. Those problems could be addictions to alcohol, sex and gambling for example.

It’s a positive that there’s a group in Sidney which tries to help individuals overcome these additions. The Life Recovery Group “ Overspenders, Gamblers, Debtors meets Mondays from 6:30-8 p.m. at Sidney Lutheran Brethren Church. For more information, email sidneymt.life.recovery@gmail.com.

According to information from the group, there are several “sign posts” on the road to compulsive spending. These include:

• Borrowing small amount of money from friends

• A different feeling when buying things on credit than when paying cash

• An inordinate sense of accomplishment in just meeting normal financial obligations such as paying the phone bill

• Inordinate apprehension when applying for a loan

• Unwarranted inhibition and embarrassment in what should be a normal discussion of money

• A lack of concern about things that don’t have to be paid for this month

• Unusual difficulty in recalling and relating specific obligations to available funds

• Unrealistic expectations that there should be funds available in the future to meet obligations incurred in the present

• A feeling that someone will take care of you if necessary so that you won’t really get into serious financial trouble. A feeling that there is always someone you can turn to for money

Of course it’s not an easy first step, but we urge you to attend a meeting if you are suffering with a conflict. A better life could be waiting for you.
