A Fairview High School alumnus published his first book earlier this month.

Tyler Knels, 21, published a mystery/crime drama called “The Seattle Massacre” on Nov. 11. Knels describes his book as a classic cat-and-mouse chase between a homicide detective and a serial killer. The detective, named Richard Holcomb, is one of the best in his field, but he is always a step behind the killer, who simply goes by the alias “Jack.”

“The detective becomes a wounded person as he tries desperately to catch this guy,” Knels said.

While “The Seattle Massacre” is Knels’ first published work, Knels has been writing since he was 15 years old. Prior to that he was more interested in sports, but a series of back injuries forced him to find another hobby.

“I started reading ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events,’ and those got me writing myself,” Knels said. “Ever since then I’ve been writing short stories.”

He began working on “The Seattle Massacre” a year ago after the idea came to him in a dream. “I got an obsession to write every day,” Knels said. “Every night since then I’ve had dreams about parts of it, and they would go on and on until I finished writing that particular chapter.”

It took him three months to write the first draft, which he began working on a year ago. When he finished the book, Knels used a self-publishing website called iUniverse to help market his work.

Rather than use his own name, Knels wrote his book under the pen name J.J. Knight, which he considers more marketable and easier to recognize. J.J. stands for his first name, Joshua, and the first half of his middle name, John. His full name is Joshua John Tyler Knels.

Knels is currently writing a sequel he intends to call “Trails of Blood.” He has seven books planned for the series. “My goal is to write the rest of my life,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing.”

Knels, who graduated from Fairview High School in 2008, is currently an English major at Bismarck State College. He is also minoring in psychology. “The Seattle Massacre” by J.J. Knight can be purchased online at Amazon.com.
