Contestants for the 2018 Miss Montana Scholarship Program and Miss Montana’s Outstanding Teen met April 7 in Billings to prepare for the state competition in Glendive June 14-16.

The contestants attending learned and demonstrated each of the four points of the crown: style, success, scholarship and service.

A full day of activities included advice from the board on what the judges are looking for and how to prepare.

Allie Baisch, Miss Montana’s Outstanding Teen, advised contestants “Don’t wait until two weeks before to prepare your talent and interview.  It takes practice to be your best”.

Each Miss Montana contestant receives a $850 scholarship for entering with many more cash and applied scholarships for excellence in academics to interview.

Jack Lawson, former executive director of Miss Montana, stressed it’s not the crown or even the scholarships; it’s the life skills they learn from being a contestant that will benefit them the rest of their lives. He and a panel including Miss Montana 2002 Heather Rathbun and Miss Montana 1997 Kristen Garlock Brooke conducted mock interviews and taped and critiqued contestants individually while others practiced their stage walk in heels and chose their swimsuit sponsored by Kandice Pelletier, a former Miss New York.

As part of Miss America Serves Day, the reigning Miss Montana Maddie Murray of Corvallis and the contestants cleaned the thrift store display shelves to the delight of the Montana Rescue Mission staff.  The extra food from their lunch was also donated to the Rescue Mission.
