Delighted or depressed, it’s really up to you and what you choose to focus on. I admit that it is not easy to see what is happening in our country and not be depressed or discouraged. By all appearances the more ungodly and perverse one is the more notoriety they receive. That which used to be called wrong or immoral is now being promoted as right and normal. If we focus on the corruption and ungodly behavior going on around us we can get discouraged and depressed.
I want you to know that the Lord knows about everything that is going on in our world. Not only does He know about it, but it is all under His control. Be assured He is not being caught off guard or surprised by such behavior. Do you want to hear some good news? God has given us specific instructions for dealing with such times as we are living in right now.
Psalm 37 was written by David to address the problems caused when godless people prosper. In this psalm David gives us several keys that will help us overcome the ungodly and immoral behavior being thrown at us.
The first key David gives us for overcoming the ungodly, immoral behavior being thrown at us is this: Don’t fret, don’t be jealous or angry of those who do wrong. It doesn’t do us any good to become angry over the behavior of ungodly people. We certainly do not agree with their behavior, but what does our anger at their behavior accomplish? In the book of Proverbs Solomon reminds us: Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of the wicked, for the evil man has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out. The next key David gives us is this: Trust in the Lord and do good. If you don’t like the way others are living, then show them how to live!
In the book of Romans Paul writes; Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21 Can you imagine what our country could be like if we, as followers of Christ, would become known for the good we do rather than for the behavior we oppose, that we literally overcame the evil with good. There is a lot of bad in this country right now, which presents us with a perfect opportunity to trust in the Lord and do good.
The next key David gives us is this: Delight yourself in the Lord. The more delighted we are in the Lord the less distraught and depressed we will be with the ungodly and immoral behavior around us. Delighting yourself in the Lord means that you are doing exactly what Jesus told us to do in Matthew 6:33-34 ‘Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow. Seeking Jesus and His kingdom, priorities, values first in our life is one way to delight ourself in the Lord.
The next key David gives us for overcoming all the ungodly, immoral behavior being thrown at us is this: Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him. It only makes sense, the more focused we are on the world and the conduct of the ungodly, the less focused we will be on God, and the less we will be trusting in Him. Commit your way to the Lord.
Sometime during this week, I encourage you to read through Psalm 37 and make note of the contrast between the destiny of the wicked and the righteous. If nothing else I hope this serves to remind you there is far more to this life than meets the eye.
There have always been and there always will be ungodly and immoral people. Thankfully David, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, gave us some keys to help us navigate through such terrible times that we are living in today.
Are you delighted or depressed? It’s up to you and what you choose to focus on. Let’s follow David’s advice and use these keys so we can be less depressed by the world and more delighted in the Lord.
