OUTDOORS ROUNDUP:

CHART. Chartreuse colored lures offer a bright, visible hue for fish and are a very popular shade in most tackleboxes.  While few natural prey items sport such a hue in the wild, the color works especially well for bass and walleyes in clearer waters. Theories abound as to its popularity with fish, but the fact that it’s easy to see and triggers a response suggest there’s value in the way the color generates a reaction strike.

BLAZE ON.  Blaze orange is associated with the opening of firearms deer season and is one of the most visible colors to the human eye against the brown backdrop of autumn. While studies of deer eyes suggest it is almost the same as beige or brown in their perception. While a push to add pink to legal fall hunting wear is on across the country, blaze orange will always be considered the primary “safe” color.

WONDROUS.  The Wonderbread crankbait pattern – white with blue, red and yellow dots that mimic the venerable bagged loaf – is sported by a number of lure making companies.  Anecdotal reports claim it is the go-to lure for walleye trolling on dingy waters, and it certainly is a fun backup pattern to have in a crankbait box.
