The state of Montana launched a new website this week as it works on selecting a location for the new Montana Heritage Center.

The public may go to https://heritagecenter.mt.gov/ for updates and to offer comments. Project committee meetings will start around August.

The steering committee is an ad hoc committee that will serve in oversight and direction-setting capacity of the building committee. The building committee is comprised of multi-agency representatives, members of the Legislature and members of the public.

Members were appointed by Montana Department of Administration Director John Lewis based on “the specific responsibilities related to their positions, expertise, and the ability to represent the interests of particular constituent groups,” the department said in a news release. The committees will report to Lewis throughout the planning and design phase of the Heritage Center project.

The initial site selection process will entail review and re-establish the Montana Historical Society's mission, goals, and project criteria with the steering committee, building committee and stakeholder groups. At the same time, consultants will conduct data collection and analysis of potential locations based on this input.

Once a site is selected, the administration will continue to consider input from all parties as the design process moves forward. The project timeline is dependent upon completion of the site selection process and how that will translate to the design process. A conceptual schedule is currently in development.

Additional information and updates will be posted online throughout the project. The website will include information broken out under four major categories, which include “Select, Design, Build, and Explore.”

Public comments may be submitted through the website at https://heritagecenter.mt.gov/ or email at heritagecenter@mt.gov.
